Not all machine tools are big

Joe Martin loves machine tools of all sizes, but he has a special love for machines at the small end of the size scale. Upon leaving the radio control industry in the 1970's he began as an importer for small lathes from Australia that were to be sold by Sears under the Craftsman name. He also marketed the tools himself under the Sherline name and eventually began producing them in the United States in 1974, having purchased the rights to do so. Expanding the tool and accessory line over the years has given him an appreciation for what these early manufacturers had to deal with in the design, production and marketing of small tools. A few years ago Joe began purchasing small tools as he found them available at shows or auctions. Several have since been donated by other patrons who appreciate small tools and want share them with others. This is just the basis of a good tool collection. The foundation plans to continue to add to this collection as interesting machines become available.

Hand-Turning Between Centers The most accurate (i.e. Concentric) manner of turning is between centers. The work is usually started by another method (in a collet or chuck) to give the basic shape and to impart on both ends; points (male) or center drilled (female).

Seeing the tools in person is an interesting walk through history, from the first simple hand-cranked watchmaker lathes to the electronically speed controlled, laser engraved machines made today. Since not many people can visit the collection in person, we will document each machine here on the Internet Craftsmanship Museum as well for the world to view. Airline mechanic arrested, accused of tampering with plane

Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani told federal investigators he tampered with the American Airlines jet because he was angry over stalled union talks; Lauren Green reports.

An American Airlines employee, allegedly angry over stalled union contract talks with the company, has been accused of disabling the navigation system on a flight slated to take off from Miami over the summer, investigators said Thursday.

Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, a veteran mechanic with the airline, was arrested Thursday and charged with willfully damaging, destroying or disabling an aircraft, The Miami Herald reported, citing a court affidavit.

Pilots on Flight 2834 bound for Nassau were alerted to the problem by an aircraft warning system before they took off on July 17, preventing possible injury to the 150 people on board.

Crews took the plane to an American Airlines hangar at Miami International Airport for routine maintenance and eventually discovered the tampering during an inspection. A mechanic found a tube underneath the cockpit that had been obstructed with foam, according to the paper.

Alani glued the foam inside the tube leading from the outside of the plane to its air data module, federal prosecutors allege. The system reports the plane's speed and other flight data.

He reportedly told federal air marshals he was angry over stalled contract negotiations between the mechanics' union and the airline, which had hurt him financially. He allegedly said he didn't mean to harm anyone on board and had tampered with the aircraft's data module to cause a 'delay or have the flight canceled.'

Investigators said they suspected Alani after reviewing video footage. In it, he is said to be seen exiting a truck on the day of the flight and accessing the compartment where the navigation system was located.
